The Highland Park Scots varsity baseball
team put together four wins and loss at last week’s annual Scot Classic
Tournament at Scotland Yard and Hillcrest High School. The Scots downed
Grapevine, 3-2 in eight innings Saturday night for the championship. The
tournament was dedicated to the memory of Grapevine’s Chris Gavora, who
died in a freak accident in batting cage a month ago. The Scots put a
#17 sign in left-field as a tribute to the young man, who helped save
six lives through organ donation. Highland Park opened the tournament in
style on Thursday as they dogged the winless R.L. Turner Lions, 10-1.
Highland Park’s Taylor Lee picked up the win and John Melson cleaned up
the final three innings to complete the quick start for HP. The Lions
managed a pair of hits off Lee in the top of the first and quickly
jumped out to a 1-0 lead. The Scots seized control of the game in the
bottom of the third inning when they scored five runs off R.L. Turner
starter Eduardo Salinas. Scot catcher Sam Davison started the uprising
with a leadoff double. Scot shortstop Joey Hainsfurther, who was
sensational both at the plate and in the field in the tournament,
followed Davison’s double with a two-run homer to give the Scots the
lead they would never relinquish. Senior captain Nick Flabiano continued
the rally with a single. Junior right-fielder Seth Gardner, was nailed
with a pitch in the back. Scot captain Will Russell delivered a clutch
two-RBI double, scoring Flabiano and Gardner for a 4-1 Scot lead. HP’s
Ryan O’Dwyer collected an RBI with a sacrifice fly to complete the
five-spot. After a run in the fourth compliments of three walks issued
by Salinas, the Scots played long-ball in the bottom of the fifth. Will
Landess and Ryan Miller also drew walks in the fifth, setting the stage
for Wes Van Dyk. The Scot linebacker blasted a shot over the left-field
wall to give Highland Park a commanding 9-1 advantage. The Scots got a
single from Landess and a sac fly from Miller. |
